Arquiled Group, ISEL and Sorocaba Faculty of Engineering collaborate in the area of smart cities
Technical scientific cooperation protocols aim to share knowledge and promote joint research projects in the area of smart cities, urban sustainability and smart street lighting
As part of its expertise in street lighting solutions, the Arquiled Group (Arquiled and Bright Science companies) recently signed protocols for scientific technical cooperation with two reputable higher learning institutions in the field of engineering – ISEL and the Faculdade de Engenharia de Sorocaba (FACENS), in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
The partnership established with the university center FACENS aims to facilitate the articulation between the institution and the research center of the Arquiled Group, aiming to promote the development of joint studies and the generation of solutions and technologies for smart cities based on intelligent street lighting systems.
IoT Living Lab
The operationalization of a IoT Living Lab on the Smart Campus of Sorocaba will be the first step of this partnership, which is intended to be extended later to other countries in Latin America and Europe, in the latter case, immediately facilitated by the twinning with ISEL’s Smart Campus, foreseen in a third protocol signed between the two higher education entities.
These laboratories will allow the development and monitoring of acoustics and communications, also replicated on ISEL’s Smart Campus, serving as the basis for joint Scientific Research and Technological Development Projects in the area of sensing and IoT with application to street lighting.
Win-win relations
According to Miguel Allen Lima, CEO of Grupo Arquiled, the expectation is that the “synergy between universities and the company” can boost innovation and the “creation of new smart city solutions in street lighting and various other services”, for the national and international markets. As technological innovation is one of Arquiled’s priorities, “the support of the scientific community is one of the main vectors to achieve this objective”, he says.
Paulo Carvalho, dean of the Centro Universitário FACENS, understands the protocol as an “excellent opportunity for the university and its students, who will integrate a high-quality research center such as Arquiled”. In this context, it should be added, there is an intention to promote a professional internship program between the universities and the Arquiled Group.
Jorge Sousa, president of ISEL, is convinced that the “deepening of synergies” is fundamental so that the three entities can achieve “common goals” in favor of the development of “a society that, increasingly, is attentive to different solutions that arise in the context of smart cities”.
Entities involved
Founded in 1976, the Faculty of Engineering of Sorocaba (FACENS) was the first institution of higher learning in Engineering in Sorocaba, offers numerous scholarships for students who have socioeconomic needs and invests all their profits in teaching. Their level of education is recognized by the labor market, which is demonstrated by the high employability rate of their graduates (90% in the last twelve years).
ISEL – Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa
One of the oldest and most renowned engineering schools in Portugal, ISEL was created in 1852 and is currently integrated in the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon. He is recognized for the quality of his teaching and for applied research. According to data from the institution itself, the employability rate of graduates is 90.5%.
Arquiled Group
Made up of Arquiled and Bright Science companies, it is the Portuguese leader in the area of LED Street Lighting and has been specializing in IoT solutions for smart cities, based on smart luminaires and focused on energy efficiency, connectivity and security. In addition to the development of pioneering projects in Portugal, it has been investing strongly in internationalization with investment in countries such as Colombia, Brazil and Spain.
